Brand History

The history of the P. F. Chang’s China Bistro starts back on July 20, 1993, when the first restaurant was opened in Scottsdale, Arizona. This restaurant is owned and operated by P. F. Chang’s China Bistro, Inc. alongside the Asian restaurant Pei Wei Asian Diner. It was created to be the upscale casual dining concept, while Pei Wei Asian Diner was founded with the idea to be the quick casual concept. However, nowadays the company is owned and operated by Centerbridge Partners, LP, but the headquarters is still in Scottsdale.

The restaurant’s name comes from a mix of the founders’ names, Philip Chiang and Paul Fleming. Though, for the name of the restaurant the name Chiang was shortened to Chang. The roots of this restaurant are in another very successful Chinese restaurant from the 1960s, The Mandarin. This was owned and operated by the mother of Philip Chiang, Cecilia. Philip wanted to help his mother manage the restaurant located in Beverly Hills and in the 1970s got involved in the business. By the 1990s Paul Fleming joined the business and so in 1993 P.F. Chang’s was founded.

In 1994, the two owners took the decision to open a second restaurant in Newport Beach, California. The next year two more locations were opened in California. In 1996 P. F. Chang’s China Bistro, Inc. was incorporated as a Delaware corporation through the opening of the first four locations. In December 1998 the company went public and released its first offer.

In 2012 there were around 200 P. F. Chang’s China Bistro restaurants in 39 states from America. The same year the company was purchased by Centerbridge Partners, LP, and was no longer traded publicly.

P. F. Chang’s China Bistro is still developing and expanding at a national and international level. There are locations all over the United States of America and some states include Virginia, Georgia, Washington, Florida, Texas, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island. Currently, there are 16 P.
